There was something about the cover of Forgetting August that just drew me in and begged me to pick it up. So I did, without even reading the synopsis...From the beginning I was confused and wondering just how it would all piece together. Somehow as the story progressed and I became more invested, some questions were answered while others were raised.I really felt for August. He was so lost in a world he had created but had no recollection of. Time is like that, she doesn't wait for anyone, let alone those hanging in the balance. My heart went out to him but at the same time I really didn't want to like him for the torment he had subjected Everly to. However, I admired him for the man he became- one worthy of forgiveness and love. One who rewrote his path on his terms and lived freely.
Everly- where do I start with her...such a complex woman. She has a kind and giving heart even after having lived through something traumatic. Something no one should have to experience, especially at the hands of those you love. But she is also closed off and retreats into herself when things get to be too much. And when her world is turned on its axis with August's return I was happy to see that she reached out instead of within. She did what she needed to do- not for anyone else but herself.
As Everly and August build new memories by revisiting their past, I found myself rooting for them. Those moments were special and touched a special place within me. It showed me how much she really cared- despite the past. But when the biggest obstacle, Trent, resurfaces, Everly is thrown back into her past and all that she had suffered. August is at a loss as to what is going on and does the only thing he knows which is whatever it takes to protect the woman he loves. Ugh! My heart ached- these two had suffered enough. And when Everly did what I didn't want her to do, I threw my kindle.
Forgetting August is a second chance romance with an extra special twist right at the end that left me with my jaw on the floor. I can honestly say that I did not see that one coming at all. J.L. Berg went for it with this one and I devoured every moment of it. My emotions were high and went all over the place. From confused to sad to happy to heartbroken to complete and utter shock. Talk about a cliffhanger! I will be waiting with baited breath for the next installment of this duet, Remembering Everly (which has an equally gorgeous cover).

Oh where do I even begin? Forgetting August had me swiping the pages so fast my thumb could have fallen off. JL Berg's talented and poetic writing had me captivated and falling in love with her style all over again.
The plot of Forgetting August is unique and intriguing, causing me to stay fully engaged the entire time I read, but it was more than just the plot. It is JL Berg's writing that pulled me in and wouldn't let my heart go, leaving me with a massive book hangover.
August and Everly's relationship is different... to say the least. It wasn't always that way. In the beginning it was beautiful, romantic, everything you could hope for. But then something changed. As August's behavior towards Everly spiraled to a dark place (no worries - no physical abuse happens), Everly started questioning their relationship and what it was based on.
August is in an accident resulting in a two year long coma. When he wakes to no memory and finds a picture of Everly, he reaches for her as the key to his memories. Everly never expected August to wake up. She's moved on. She's built a new life. But August waking up shakes up both their lives. Secrets are revealed. Secrets are kept hidden. Lives are abruptly shifted and changed. The questions pile up and just as in life, there's no easy answer. It isn't black or white. It's muddled, a rainbow of colors.
Forgetting August isn't a typical love story. But don't let that deter you from snatching this one up. As much as I can almost guarantee it will have your heart racing, it will also have your heart soaring and face smiling. August and Everly have a love that is easy to see but pasts are pasts. They never truly go away. They definitely aren't forgotten. I loved every moment - even the moments that made me want to cry out in frustration.
I leave with this JL Berg's writing is one that is passionate, moving, graceful and downright touching. Her talented way of putting words together, forming alluring romance, is what keeps me recommending anything she writes time and time again. Forgetting August is absolutely no exception. This story was one I fell in love with and can't wait for more.
**sidenote this story does end in a cliffhanger but don't let that deter you! release has been set for the second in this amazing duet.
