This book is a fun romp with the Wild West as the setting. Old Red and Big Red are bothers. In the winter of 1893 they find themselves out of work so when they’re offered a job on the secretive Bar VR ranch they take it. The ranch is shrouded in mystery and the brothers find themselves confined to a restricted area around the bunkhouse. People start to turn up dead and Old Red assumes the task of “deducifying” what is going on. He’s learned the trade of detective from having his brother, Big Red, read him Sherlock Homes stories.

The author has managed to throw everything but the kitchen sink into the story making for a tale reminiscent of the old TV Show The Wild, Wild West. There is comedy aplenty and the outrageous characters make for a unique and fun read. There is English nobility, a wannabe cowboy, real cowboys, a Swedish chef an albino Negro and Hungry Bob the Cannibal.

If you’re into Westerns this ain’t Tony Hillerman or Zane Grey but it’s an outlandish and bizarre version of the genre that you won’t regret choosing.

Holmes on the Range Holmes on the Range Mysteries Steve Hockensmith 9780312358044 Books Reviews

What a fun and fast-paced mystery this novel presents! It offers such a blend of genres that you might think combining them would be difficult, but Hockensmith manages the mix with a deft hand. He is a little prone to telling rather than showing, but one might lay the blame for this mistake on his narrator, a cowboy new to the writing habit. The protagonists are engaging, but the colorful background characters really make the novel move. As a Holmes connected novel, this book resembles the well-reviewed Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time more than a mere pastiche, and, if you like the one, you will probably the enjoy the other, too.

This would make great summer reading for anyone who enjoys westerns, mysteries, comic novels or Holmes-inspired fiction. I want Hockensmith to write more Big Red and Little Red novels soon!
This mystery gets you out of the usual, run of the mill fair and places you in the west of the 1800s. Old Red and Big Red are great characters and some of the clues given along the way (and the explanation at the end) certainly conjure up Sherlock Holmes. A good, refreshing different, sometimes humorous, always entertaining, read.
What drew me to Steve Hockensmith's books was not the lure of a good western with a humorous flavor and a sprinkling of mystery. I'm not a big reader of westerns. Yet, when I stumbled across Hockensmith's hilarious blog, I had to pick up his books. It was a moral imperative.
I cannot tell you how quickly Big Red and Old Red yanked me in and wouldn't let me go. It dropped me into the old west with all its cow pokie glory and then held me there in fascination. The characters are unique and Hockensmith's depiction of them made it easy for me to picture them in my mind.
I burned through this book in a day because I couldn't put it down. Even if you're not a fan of westerns or historicals, you might find this an entertaining book to read.
I highly recommend this book. I'm already two chapters into his next one "On The Wrong Track" and I love it.
If you're not sure you want to dip your toes into a new author, check out his blog and get a feel for his character. His books are very similar, if not better.
This review is for the version - I'm subtracting one star because the formatting was bad with some missing words, crooked lines and words hyphenated in the middle of a line. So, almost certainly four stars for the paperback version.
As for the book, I can imagine the author thinking, "I like cowboys and I like Holmes - they are from roughly the same era, so why not . . . " He does an excellent job delivering on this clever idea. I really liked the fact that Holmes and Watson are real people in this universe and not fictional characters. They don't appear, but the reader discovers they are real (better not say more). The author does a good job of combining a good mystery solved by Holmesian logic with some nice cowboy riding, roping and shooting action and restrained humor. There was one section of the book where the author overdid the mention of outhouse smells and dialogs punctuated by flatuence jokes.
I'll definitely read the others in the series though. A nice read for cowboy and/or mystery fans.
I was looking for a new author to entertain me. I stumbled upon Hockensmith's latest Holmes novel at Costco and skimmed through it. I liked what little I read and thought I should take a chance on this writer. Well, the book I found was not the first in the "Holmes on the Range" series of books. So, I downloaded the first book, this one, to my recently-acquired and found myself thoroughly enjoying Gustav Amlingmeyer (Old Red) emulating Sherlock Holmes. I suspect that Otto Amlingmeyer (Big Red) will make a perfectly good Dr. Watson in telling the world about the exploits of Old Red.

The language in the book creates the characters into believable people. Keeping Holmes and Watson as real-life characters is the key. In fact, there are many Holmes adventures yet to be written at the time the Big Red begins his deductifying. Holmes is dead, in Switzerland. I look forward to see how Hockensmith interlaces Holmes detecting and Amlingmeyer's in the future books.

I have watched a lot of westerns and read a few. This book makes for a decent western all by itself. I almost would like to see the Amlingmeyer's run into Holmes and Watson in some future case, but that would probably require Doyle to come back from the dead.

At least now, I have four more recent Holmes on the Range mysteries to read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The Amlingmeyer brothers have been characterized so well that I'm positive that were i to pass them on the street i would know them. This was the first book on my wonderful journey to the 1893 west. The books are so well written. I love how Big Red 'author's the books with humor, honesty, and heart. After reading this first book I had to read them all and I have. I can't wait for book 6! I wish I had the author's wit to write a better review, the book deserves it. Loved them!
